Nigerian Government Don Give MTN and Others Licence to Generate Electricity

Federal government don grant permission to MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, Havenhill Synergy, Golden Penny Power Limited, and other companies make dem generate mini-grid electricity for di country.

Na through di Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), di government give nine new off-grid generation licences for di first quarter of 2024, wey get total capacity of 109.69 megawatts. Dem also issue three new trading licences.

MTN get permit to build four captive generation plants wey go generate 15.94MW across different locations for Lagos State.

Other companies wey dem allow generate captive power include Armilo Plastics Limited, SweetCo Foods Limited, West African Ceramics Limited, African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited, and Royal Engineered Stones Limited.

Golden Penny Power Limited don secure licence to build six off-grid gas plants for Oyo, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states. Di total capacity of these plants na 100MW.

Captive power generation permits na for companies wey wan build and manage power plants wey go supply electricity for their own use and no be to sell give third party. For di first quarter of 2024, NERC don issue nine captive power permits wey get total nameplate capacity of 52.57MW.

Other companies wey benefit from mini-grid licences include Daybreak Power Solutions, Auro Nigeria Private Limited, TIS Renewable Energy Limited, Watts Exchange Limited, Centum Dopemu Energy Services Ltd, and DMD Electric Limited for Lagos State.

According to Section 165(1)(m) of di Electricity Act 2023, NERC fit give licence for mini-grid concessions to renewable energy companies wey go serve particular locations with di responsibility to generate and distribute electricity for dat area.

NERC talk say after dem evaluate mini-grid applications well, dem issue three mini-grid permits and two registration certificates for di first quarter of 2024.
