She talk say, “For May 6, my pikin drop di baby for creche by 8am. As she dey hand ova di pikin to di creche oga, di oga tell am say na only two pikin dem dey dia – di one year 11 months pikin (wey be my grand pikin) and anoda baby – plus hersef and her husband, as oda pikin dem wey no dey wear pampers don go swimming lesson.”
“Around 5:45pm to 6pm, my pikin call say make my patna go pick di baby for creche. As my patna reach dia, di baby dey cry. Wen di baby reach house, she still dey cry. My pikin come back like 10 minutes later, di baby still dey cry dey pull her pampers dey show her mama say her cookie (vagina) dey pain am.”
“We no send am first as we tink say na pee dey pain am. She cry tey well well. We cari am go King George Hospital for night but di doctor say na just infection, if e still dey pain afta two weeks, make we come back. I no happy with wetin dem talk because I no even get money to buy di medicine dem write.”
“Di next day (May 7), we go Newlands East Medical Centre. As we see di doctor, she say dem don touch di baby.
“She send us go Addington Hospital. For dia, di doctor no even get rape kit. For Wednesday, May 8, we go back to di first doctor, ask am wia we go go because we no dey see beta result afta all di waka wey we don waka.
Dat Wednesday, dem go Newlands East police station and one warrant officer call dem. She say di officer yan wit her pikin say she wan arrest am sake of some tins wey dem post for social media, and di creche oga don report.
“Di officer still talk say dem neva open any case sef. She even say she go cari di pikin go social care. We explain give am say na up and down we don dey go hospital dey find rape kit. We even show am di letter from di doctor. I show am di video and pictures dem,” na so di grandmama tok.
As dem show di warrant officer di foto and video dem, she come see say somtin no dey okay and she tell dem make dem go Thuthuzela Care Centre.
“Na early mor-mor for Thursday na im surgeon come confam say true true na penis enter di pikin. Later dat evening, we go open case for Newlands East police station.
“For Friday, one oga from Family Crisis Services wey dey torchlight di mata come ask us questions. For Monday, e tell us say dem still dey work on top di mata.”
Dr Nadia Bernon wey be Rapid Response Team Leader on top Gender-Based Violence and Femicide – Newlands East (ward 11), raise di mata say di creche dey only collect small small girl pikin dem and say dem must don reach 5 years.
