Na so di subsidy wey Federal Govment dey pay for light don climb from N102.30 billion for May to N181.63 billion for September. For di last three months alone, govment don pay N163.87 billion for July, N173.88 billion for August, and N181.63 billion for September 2024.
Dis one dey happen after NERC (dat na di people wey dey control light matter for Naija) talk say dem don comot subsidy for some areas wey dem call Band A feeders on April 3, 2024. Dat time, NERC talk say di monthly subsidy for light na N140.7 billion.
So, NERC come approve make light bill increase for people wey dey enjoy at least 20 hours light every day, come raise dia bill to N225 for every kilowatt-hour.
But dis decision no sweet for many Naija people at all. Labour unions, schools and hospitals come dey shout as dia light bills come triple after dem comot di subsidy.
For May, when di subsidy come drop small to N102.30 billion, govment come reduce di Band A bill to N206.80/kWh. NERC say na because dollar rate to naira come fall small.
But as June reach, di subsidy come jump again reach N158 billion, so dem come raise di bill again to N209/kWh for early July.
As September reach, NERC say dollar rate na N1,601.5. Dem still dey use di same price of $2.42 for gas wey dem dey use make light.
All dis one dey show say e dey cost more and more to make light for Naija.
As inflation for Naija don reach 32.15 percent for August 2024, people dey fear say another light bill increase fit happen for October, unless di cost to make light come down small.
